Burger King reformulated the nuggets after thousands of texts and calls, part of a turnaround that lifted US sales 8.5% Burger King

Burger King is scrapping its 'rubbery' chicken nuggets for a 100% white meat recipe on 1 September, a nationwide overhaul driven by thousands of customer complaints and timed to challenge McDonald's on the same day.

Why Burger King Ditched Its Old Nuggets

The Miami-based chain confirmed the change on 25 August, describing its previous nuggets as 'rubbery', 'dry', and 'disappointing' in the words of its own customers. The new version uses 100% white meat chicken, a crispier golden breading, and a reworked marinade for a juicier bite. The nuggets also move from a bag to a box designed to keep them hotter for longer.

Suggested prices run from $1.99 (£1.47) for a four-piece to $7.49 (£5.55) for 20 pieces. Burger King is pairing the nuggets with revamped honey mustard and sweet and sour sauces, plus a new limited-time Special Savory Sauce blending barbecue seasoning, ketchup, garlic, onion, and black pepper.

How Customer Complaints Drove the Redesign

The overhaul grew out of a feedback experiment Burger King ran earlier in 2026, when it published the personal phone number of Tom Curtis, president of Burger King US and Canada, and asked customers to text or call with complaints. Thousands did, and the nuggets drew sharp criticism. The company then turned that criticism into a marketing story, promoting the very complaints that led to the redesign.

'We take Guest feedback seriously, and when we received thousands of texts, calls, and comments telling us our nuggets needed a total overhaul, we listened,' said Amy Alarcon, head chef for Burger King US and Canada. She said the team tested the recipe with real customers, including children.

The relaunch follows a remade Whopper under Burger King's multiyear 'Reclaim the Flame' turnaround, which is backed by up to $700 million (£513 million) in investment.

A Nugget War With McDonald's

The timing sets up a direct clash. McDonald's is reviving its Spicy Chicken McNuggets on the same day, returning the cayenne and chili pepper coating it first introduced in 2020. Wendy's is running a 10-piece nugget deal for $1.99 through its app until 27 September.

Chicken has become the main battleground in US fast food as beef prices climb and diners look for cheaper white meat. Visits to chicken-focused chains have outpaced burger rivals, pushing Taco Bell, KFC, and others to widen their own poultry menus.

The Sales Gap Burger King Needs To Close

Burger King enters the fight with momentum. Its US same-store sales rose 8.5% in the second quarter of 2026, beating McDonald's by the widest margin in more than a decade and lifting it past Wendy's to become the second-largest US burger chain.

The nugget aisle is where it lags, and the new recipe is aimed at families, a group Burger King has long tried to win from McDonald's. Technomic data showed that about 30% of McDonald's and Chick-fil-A customers add nuggets to their orders, a rate that falls to roughly 15% at Burger King. Robert Byrne, senior director of consumer research at Technomic, said better nuggets are a logical way to draw families and raise spending per visit.

Not everyone sees risk in the late entry. R.J. Hottovy, head of analytical research at Placer.ai, said constant innovation keeps the category open regardless of timing, and chicken's lower cost against beef makes the new nuggets a useful value-menu tool. Whether the recipe closes the gap will test if Burger King's run can hold.
