A 10-year-old Japanese butterfly researcher has taken an experiment about caterpillar memory much further than a simple question of whether insects remember life before metamorphosis, finding evidence that a learned response may persist into the offspring and grandchildren of trained butterflies.

Jo Nagai, from Kobe, Japan, became fascinated by swallowtail butterflies and wondered whether experiences learned during the caterpillar stage could survive metamorphosis. His question eventually led him to work with Georgetown University entomologist Dr Martha Weiss, whose earlier research had found that moths could retain learned responses after transforming into adults.

Nagai later asked an even bigger question: could that learned response continue into future generations? His research suggests it can, although further scientific work is needed to establish exactly how the effect occurs.

How the 10-Year-Old Tested Butterfly Memory

Nagai's experiment involved Asian swallowtail caterpillars and the smell of lavender. He conditioned the larvae to associate the scent with an aversive stimulus, then tested whether that learned response remained after they became adult butterflies.

After metamorphosis, trained butterflies continued to avoid the lavender scent, suggesting that the learned response had survived the transformation.

The approach was inspired by earlier research involving moths. A 2008 study by Douglas Blackiston, Elena Silva Casey and Weiss found that tobacco hornworm caterpillars could learn to avoid an odour paired with an aversive stimulus and retain that learned response after becoming moths.

The Butterfly Experiment Went Beyond Metamorphosis

Nagai then asked whether the learned response could continue into future generations. A 2024 report said the offspring and grandchildren also showed avoidance of the lavender scent, despite not having experienced the original conditioning themselves.

That finding shifts the question from memory surviving within one insect to whether a learned response can persist across generations.

The Ecological Society of Japan's 2026 research abstract describes the work as 'Epigenetic Transmission of Learned Larval Memory across Generations in Papilio xuthus.' It reports that the learned response was transmitted to children and grandchildren and that the effect weakened over successive generations.

Why Inherited Memory Is Scientifically Significant

The findings do not prove that butterflies inherit a literal memory in the same way a person remembers an event.

Instead, they raise questions about transgenerational inheritance, in which an experience could be associated with biological changes that influence behaviour in descendants.

That distinction is important because the research shows a behavioural response, while the precise biological mechanism responsible for that response remains unresolved. The Ecological Society of Japan's abstract describes the research as an investigation of epigenetic transmission rather than proof that memories themselves are simply copied from one generation to another.

Nagai's work also involved following butterflies through three generations, making the reported grandchildren response a particularly striking aspect of the research.

Nagai Presented the Research Internationally

Nagai presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in 2024, where researchers from around the world gathered. A Japanese report said he created the English-language poster himself, designed its structure and presented his research in English.

His research later became the subject of renewed online discussion after a Reddit post framed the experiment as a story about butterflies remembering the boy who raised them. However, that framing oversimplifies the research.

The study was not simply about whether butterflies remembered him. It examined whether a learned response could survive metamorphosis and potentially appear in descendants that had never experienced the original conditioning.

That makes the grandchildren finding the most striking part of the research, while the precise mechanism behind the reported generational effect remains an open scientific question.
