A 10-year-old girl is suing her mother for £100,000 for killing her heavily pregnant stepsister in a drink-driving accident.

The accident also left Cansu Ozkan, who is now 10, with terrible injuries. She underwent five different operations before she contracted MRSA in hospital, which further hampered her recovery.

Pregnant Filiz Ozkan lost her life in the crash and allegedly tried to take over the car's steering wheel seconds before the crash.

Filiz shared the same father with Cansu but was not related to her mother.

Ceyda Ozkan, 34, was jailed for nearly five years in February 2010, but is expected to be released next month.

Cansu was in the back seat of the car when her mother drove it into a tree on the way home from a family party.

In papers submitted to the high court, Cansu, who now lives with her father Bahattin Ozkan in Forest Hill, southeast London, is suing her mother for negligence.

Witnesses said the car was travelling at between 60 and 70mph in a 30mph area when the crash occurred on New Year's Day 2009.

Sentencing in 2010, Judge Phillip Shorrock said: "In your bad driving whilst drunk, you were showing a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road and the danger of serious harm being caused to others."

Filiz's mother, Sebahat Yilmaz, said that the death of her daughter had ripped her family apart.

"Ceyda killed my daughter and we're not in touch at all, not after that," she said. "Four-and-a-half years in prison wasn't much for taking away the lives of my daughter and her baby. I think they should have given her more."
