Chelsea have confirmed Brazilian midfielder Nathan will return to Vitesse Arnhem on loan for the 2016-17 season. Nathan, 20, joined the Blues from Atletico Paranaense last July for a reported £4.5m ($6.5m).

As has been customary for many youngsters who have joined the Premier League side in recent years, the attacking midfielder immediately moved to Dutch club Vitesse, where he was later joined by fellow Chelsea youngsters Danilo Pantic, Lewis Baker, Izzy Brown and Dominic Solanke.

Having made 19 appearances and scored twice in all competitions last season, he will return for a second spell next term.

While the renewal of the deal would suggest all parties were satisfied with last season's arrangement, Chelsea's Dutch scout Piet De Visser was critical of the Dutch's side's handling of the player, accusing them, among other things, of playing him out of position.

"The Chelsea boys have a high basic level, therefore in England they don't understand why they are not playing regularly," De Visser told Voetbal International in May.

"A guy like Nathan is a real number ten, but it is incomprehensible that he never gets a chance in that position. Of course Chelsea are not satisfied with the lack of progress made by their players. If Vitesse want to keep these talents but not play them regularly, I would advise Chelsea to send them somewhere else."

Chelsea had a total of 28 players out on loan last season.
