Clarke Carlisle is awake in hospital where he is being treated after the former footballer was involved in a serious road crash with a lorry.

The 35-year-old former Burnley defender was seriously injured following the collision on the A64, near York, on 22 December and remains in a Leeds hospital.

His wife Gemma Carlisle took to Twitter to update concerned wellwishers on her husband's condition.

She wrote: "Thank you again for asking after Clarke. He's still in hospital but is getting better & stronger each day."

Carlisle forged a career as football pundit on TV following his retirement from the game and has also spoken of his battle with depression, which included a suicide bid when he a youngster at Queen's Park Rangers.

North Yorkshire Police launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident and appealed for witnesses.

It has emerged Carlisle also faces a drink driving charge after allegedly failing to provide a sample to police.
