Eric Dane's GoFundMe has been put on temporary hold after donations surged past its initial $250,000 (£185,450 at current rate) target, with the total sitting at more than $290,000 (approximately £215,151) as of writing. The pause comes as GoFundMe reviews the fundraiser and seeks further information from the people behind the account, with the platform saying the funds are being safely held in the meantime.

The campaign was created by friends of the actor to seek donations for the people he left behind, and it quickly drew high-profile contributions. This includes $27,000 (around £19,800) from 'Euphoria' director Sam Levinson and his wife, and $20,000 from Hailey Bieber (around £19,800). The scale of the donations, driven in part by Dane's celebrity status, raised concerns that triggered the review. In a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle, GoFundMe confirmed it had reached out to the account organisers and that the funds remain secure until the process is complete.

Eric Dane's Death and ALS Diagnosis

Dane passed away on 19 February 2026 following a short battle with ALS, the neurodegenerative disease that currently has no cure. He announced his diagnosis the previous year, and his family later released a statement confirming he was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death.

It was also revealed that Dane recorded a touching goodbye video dedicated to his family. In the clip, he declared his love for Rebecca Gayheart and said he had never loved anyone as deeply as he loved her. The 'Grey's Anatomy' actor also told his daughters, Billie and Georgia, to hold their heads up high — adding that they are his everything and that they hold his heart.

Why Friends Launched the Fundraiser

Dane's close friend Mike McGuiness released a statement on Instagram explaining the decision to launch the GoFundMe. He said they sought donations for Dane's family because the actor had been unable to leave them with the financial resources he had hoped to provide.

'Covid and ALS did a number on his work life and he sadly couldn't leave his family with the resources he had hoped. I'm the positive spin guy and can come up with something hopeful in most any situation. This one broke me. I had nothing to say — it's about as hopeless an affliction one could get,' he wrote.

Gayheart Thanks Supporters

Gayheart expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support their family received following Dane's death. On her Instagram Story, the actress shared throwback photos with Dane and one of their daughters.

'I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There aren't words to express our gratitude. You are truly holding us up during this difficult time,' she wrote.

A Career Best Known for 'McSteamy'

Dane gained popularity after playing the role of Mark Sloan in the long-running ABC medical drama 'Grey's Anatomy', where his character earned the nickname McSteamy and became one of the show's most recognisable faces. Other than 'Grey's Anatomy', Dane also starred in 'Euphoria', 'Saved by the Bell', 'The Last Ship', 'Countdown', 'Charmed', and 'Private Practice'.
