Yuri Nakamura Dead at 44: Actress Dies of Rectal Cancer After Disease Returned Following Remission

Japanese actress Yuri Nakamura died from rectal cancer on 1 September at the age of 44, after the disease returned following earlier remission, her agency Alpha Agency announced on 14 September. The company said she had first been treated for cancer 13 years ago, later went into remission and continued her acting career while undergoing regular check-ups.

Cancer was detected again in January 2025. The agency said surgery was successful, but metastasis was subsequently discovered. A complete cure or further remission was considered difficult, and Nakamura continued treatment while working.

Alpha Agency said Nakamura and the company president agreed at the time of her earlier diagnosis, 'Let's not tell our colleagues the name of the disease, as it would cause them unnecessary worry.'

The statement did not identify the type of cancer diagnosed 13 years earlier. After remission, she remained professionally active, continued regular medical check-ups and kept doing the work she loved.

The cancer detected in January 2025 changed the course of her treatment. Although surgery initially went well, the agency said metastasis was found afterwards.

With a complete cure or remission considered difficult at that stage, Nakamura continued treatment aimed at managing the cancer while seeking to live as long and actively as possible.

Her agency said she studied her condition closely and that her doctor encouraged her to remain professionally active. She continued appearing in projects while receiving treatment, rather than withdrawing immediately from acting.

Treatment continued alongside her acting schedule through the following months. The agency said Nakamura was working towards recovery and a return to work before her health worsened again later in the summer.

That balance became harder to maintain as her health declined. On 13 July, it was announced that Nakamura would step down from the NHK drama Dangerous, which was scheduled to begin airing in January 2027, because of an intestinal obstruction.

Yuri Nakamura Faced Another Intestinal Obstruction in August

In August, while preparing for a possible return to work, Nakamura developed another bowel obstruction. Her agency said she was then told that she had little time remaining.

The statement said she spent her final period with family and people close to her. Alpha Agency also said her funeral had already been held privately, attended by close relatives, actors represented by the agency and staff.

The agency said much of Nakamura's 30s and 40s were shaped by illness alongside her work, and also noted the relationships and professional experiences she had during that period. It thanked fans, colleagues, performers and staff who had supported her throughout her career.

Yuri Nakamura Built a Career Across Film, Television and Music

Born in Osaka on 15 March 1982, Nakamura entered entertainment in 1998 as a member of the music duo YURIMARI. She later moved into acting and became known for roles across Japanese film and television.

Nakamura received recognition for her performance as the heroine in the 2007 film Pacchigi! Love & Peace. Her later credits included Arc, At the Window, Samurai Detective Onihei: Blood for Blood, SUPER RICH and the Netflix series Romantics Anonymous.

She also appeared in the 2022 drama Kurosagi and the 2025 series Shumaku no Rondo - Mou Nidoto, Aenai Anata ni -. Her work continued after cancer was detected again, even as treatment became a regular part of her life.

Alpha Agency said Nakamura had remained focused on both treatment and acting until her condition worsened in August. The agency announced her death on 14 September and said her funeral had already taken place privately.
