Overview

Lionel Messi will look to cap another remarkable 12 months by being crowned the world footballer of the year for a fifth time. Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Neymar represent his main rivals for the Ballon'Or prize but the Argentine is the firm favourite to scoop the illustrious prize.

In 2015, Messi was the linchpin of a Barca side which swept aside all before them in winning the treble for a second time. Part of the most formidable attacking triumphant in world football, the 28-year-old returned to his very best after a lean 2014.

After claiming the prize in successive years, Ronaldo has endured a disappointing year during which Real went through two different managers and failed to win a major trophy. The Portugal winger did net a remarkable 57 goals in all competitions, but the reality is he was unable to match the standards he had set the two years previous.

Neymar is the third contender for the award and though he may be overlooked this term, his route to the summit of global football continued with a remarkable year with Barcelona. Combining with Messi and Luis Suarez, Neymar was often the stand-out figure and his goal in the Champions League final was pivotal in Barcelona's pursuit of the treble.
