The transfer window has now closed, with Premier League clubs spending £175m ($252m) this January as clubs look to improve their position in the second half of the season.

Surprisingly deadline day itself delivered two major signings not from the top or bottom of the table, but in the middle, with Stoke City once again breaking their transfer record to sign Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula for £18.3m and Everton buying striker Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow for £13.5m.

Relegation strugglers Newcastle United were the most active in the window, bringing in Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia in a bid to avoid the drop this season.

But what were the best deals made this January, and which clubs' lack of action could prove costly come the end of the season? In this video, IBTimes UK sports reporter Tony Mogan delivers his verdict.
