Former England midfielder Joey Barton faces spending a full year behind bars on remand after a judge at Liverpool Crown Court refused his renewed bid for bail over an alleged assault at a Merseyside golf club.

The 44-year-old, who denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, is now set to remain in custody until at least March 2027.

He had been due to stand trial last week, but the case was adjourned and relisted for 8 March 2027, exactly a year after the alleged incident at Fairway, Huyton. Barton has been in custody since his arrest shortly after the events in question.

Bail Refused in Brief Court Hearing

Barton appeared via videolink from HMP Liverpool, wearing a grey zip-up fleece, as Judge David Potter refused his bail application and formally remanded him in custody. He nodded as the decision was announced, according to the court.

No detailed reasons for the refusal were given in material released after the hearing. Courts typically weigh the seriousness of the charge, the risk of a defendant absconding and the potential for interference with witnesses when ruling on bail applications.

The trial is expected to last around two weeks, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for 11 December. That hearing will be the next formal step in the case before proceedings begin in full next spring.

Prosecutors allege Barton attacked Lynch after the two had been drinking together at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March.

Lynch, a former non-league football manager who also works in education, suffered serious injuries to an eye, according to the prosecution's case.

Barton denies the charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until a jury finds otherwise.
