KEY POINTS

  • The Campbells only realised they'd won after returning home and checking the Millionaire Maker code
  • The couple believe their recently deceased dog Kash may have had a spiritual hand in the win

A couple from Liverpool celebrating their ruby wedding anniversary abroad have become overnight millionaires. They now believe their late dog may have played a part in their incredible luck.

Margaret and John Campbell were on holiday on a sun-soaked Greek island when Margaret received an email from The National Lottery saying there was 'news' about her EuroMillions ticket. Assuming it was the usual £2.80 ($3.79), she thought little of it and continued enjoying the trip.

'We'd just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary,' Margaret recalled. 'We were joking that I was wearing an imaginary ruby ring. I didn't think twice about the email. We couldn't even log into the app while we were away, so I just let it be.'

Reality Sank In Late

The couple returned to Liverpool at 4:00am. Like any holidaymaker adjusting back to normal life, Margaret said she unpacked, 'did a few loads of washing,' and had a nap. It wasn't until the next morning that she remembered to check her ticket.

'I saw I'd only matched one number and I thought, "Oh well, that's that,"' she said. 'But then I saw the Millionaire Maker code matched — it took me a few seconds to realise. I turned to John and said, "I think I've won a million pounds." He looked at me and said it must be a scam.'

John, equally stunned, couldn't believe what he was hearing. 'I just said, "No way." It didn't feel real at all.'

Margaret called one of their sons to share the news. 'When he arrived, I ran outside shouting, "I have, I've won!" He just said, "Mum, get back inside before everyone finds out!"'

Later, when she phoned The National Lottery to confirm the win, the enormity of it finally sank in.

'The lady on the phone told me to get a pen and paper,' Margaret said. 'She said, "Write this down — one, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero." That's what you've won. £1 million. I was literally shaking, my hands were shaking.'

In Memory Of Kash The Dog

But for the Campbells, there's another emotional layer to their story.

Just weeks before their trip, the couple lost their beloved dog Kash, a six-year-old who had been part of their lives since he was a puppy.

'He was a lovely dog,' John said. 'Sadly he wasn't well and couldn't be helped. We keep saying now that it's Kash looking down on us and bringing us cash with this big win.'

Kash Brought Them Cash (And A Ruby Ring!)

The couple say they'll finally buy Margaret a real ruby ring to mark their anniversary properly — not just the imaginary one she had been pretending to wear during their trip. They will also give something to their two sons as well as pay off their house and car mortgages.

'This win has come at a time when we really needed a lift,' Margaret said. 'It still doesn't feel real, but we're so grateful — and yes, I do think Kash had a paw in it.'

Margaret, 60, bought her EuroMillions Lucky Dip ticket before jetting off to Greece. She matched the unique Millionaire Maker raffle code on her ticket which was code MQDD 67764, drawn on Tuesday, 24 June.

As for what's next, the couple says they're still coming to terms with it all — but they're taking it as a sign that some bonds, especially the ones we have with our pets, never truly break.
