A new year and a new manager for Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers' three-year tenure in charge came to an end when he was dismissed in October, with new boss Jurgen Klopp having his first chance in January to begin to stamp his mark on the team.

But the same problems that plagued the previous manager, namely a leaky defence and a lack of firepower in attack, have meant that the German's start, barring a 4-1 demolition of Manchester City, has hardly set pulses racing.

But with other big clubs faltering, the Reds still have a chance of putting on a good run of form and securing a lucrative Champions League place for next season.
