A crash on the M6 motorway on Christmas Day has led to "multiple deaths", according to the Staffordshire police.

The motorway has been closed from both sides as the accident took place at a spot between junction 14 and 15.

"At this early stage Police are not yet able to confirm details but (we) are confirming that there have been lives lost. The incident took place northbound just before the junction 15 exit road and involved one vehicle," said the Staffordshire police in a statement.

The road is likely to be shut for the next few hours as rescue teams have swung into action. The police are in the process of informing the relatives of the victims.

"Northbound traffic is being diverted, leaving at J14 and rejoining at J15 following the 'Hollow Triangle' symbol signed diversion, via the A34 and A500. Southbound traffic is being diverted, leaving at J15 and rejoining at J14 following the 'Hollow Triangle' symbol signed diversion, via the A500 and A34," said the Highways Agency.

M6 has been one of the routes critically affected by the recent inclement weather.
