Two people have been arrested in Barbados over the shooting of two British tourists in a robbery on the Caribbean island.

Philip and Ann Prior, aged 72 and 59 respectively, were shot near the harbour in the capital of Bridgetown during a stopover on an 85-day world cruise on the P&O's MV Adonia.

Insp David Welch of the Royal Barbados Police Force said two suspects were being questioned but had not been charged.

Welch confirmed that Mr Phillip was shot in the pelvis and was in hospital. His wife, whose handbag was stolen during the robbery, was shot in the thigh and had been released.

The couple, who live in Woodbridge, Suffolk, had gone ashore on a sightseeing and shopping trip after the 30,000-tonne, 710-passenger MV Adonia docked in Bridgetown.
