Taylor Swift Fans Beg Her to 'Take a Break' After 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore' Gets Mixed Reviews

Taylor Swift fans have urged the pop star to 'take a break' after four new songs from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore sparked sharply divided reactions from critics and listeners. Released on Friday, 25 September, the deluxe edition adds 'Patient Zero', 'Cleveland!', 'Pink Clouding' and 'Babylon', nearly a year after the original album.

While some listeners have praised the new material, others have questioned whether Swift should step away from music before returning with another album.

The reaction has spilled onto social media, with some Swifties questioning whether Swift should step away from music after hearing the four new Encore tracks.

Similar sentiments have appeared on TikTok. Zack wrote: 'I think it's time for Taylor to have a little break,' while another comment asked: 'Why can't she just take a break until she's a bit inspired.'

Music creator Emily Treadgold went further, writing that she was 'begging her to take a 5 year hiatus'.

Another self-described Swiftie suggested a two- to three-year break to 'work on a great album'.

The calls for a break have not been universal, however, with other listeners praising aspects of The Encore, underscoring the divided response to the new material.

Critics Split Over The Encore

That divide is also reflected in the critical response. Reviews have ranged from highly critical to enthusiastic. The Guardian gave the four-track release two stars, with critic Laura Snapes arguing that the new songs continued some of the issues she identified with The Life of a Showgirl.

In a Daily Mail opinion piece, commentator Link Lauren argued that Swift's songwriting remains rooted in a 'high school' perspective and criticised what he described as oversaturation from her frequent releases.

In a video discussing his review, Lauren said Swift was 'still writing songs like a 15-year-old girl in the high school hallway' and pointed to Adele's longer gaps between albums as an example of how time away could allow an artist to return with new material.

The Independent also took a mixed view, praising 'Babylon' while describing the other three songs as weaker. Variety, meanwhile, found positives in the release despite raising reservations about 'Cleveland!'

Not every review was negative. USA Today praised the expanded album and described it as deserving 'an ovation'.

Four New Songs Spark Debate

Swift said the Encore tracks came together after she travelled to Sweden to celebrate the original album's success with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. A studio visit led to the creation of four additional songs.

'Patient Zero' received a major visual push, with its music video premiering at the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday, 27 September. Directed by Swift, it stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with Swift playing Farrell's former partner, who returns as a ghost to warn Johnson's character.

Swift said the song was inspired by a conversation with a friend's new partner about an ex, which prompted others in their group to share similar experiences.

'Cleveland!' has emerged as one of the more divisive tracks, with critics focusing on its lyrics about Swift's marriage to Travis Kelce and her response to critics of their relationship.

'Pink Clouding' and 'Babylon' have received more favourable assessments in some reviews, with critics highlighting their emotional and nostalgic qualities.

Swift said the songs were created out of 'pure gratitude' for fans' support of the original album.
