Milo Yiannopoulos Demanded Millions Be Deported, Then ICE Chained Him and Shipped Him to Britain

Milo Yiannopoulos has found himself at the centre of an extraordinary immigration controversy after the British far-right commentator was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and deported to the United Kingdom, despite previously advocating some of the country's harshest immigration policies.

Yiannopoulos was arrested at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on 27 August after US immigration authorities determined that he had overstayed his visa and failed to attend an immigration hearing. The Department of Homeland Security said he had entered the United States legally in May 2019 but was later issued a final order of removal on 22 July.

The dramatic reversal has generated widespread online mockery, particularly because Yiannopoulos had previously supported aggressive immigration enforcement and even advocated for people without legal status to be deported.

Milo Once Backed Aggressive Deportation Policies

Yiannopoulos became a prominent figure in the American far right during Donald Trump's first presidential campaign, frequently promoting hardline positions on immigration.

According to reporting surrounding his deportation, he had previously called for ICE checkpoints to be established at places such as supermarkets, petrol stations and shopping centres. He also argued that people should be deported if they could not prove that they had legal status in the United States.

That history has made his own removal particularly striking. The irony was not lost on social media users, many of whom circulated his ICE booking photograph while pointing out that the immigration system he had once promoted had ultimately been used against him.

One widely shared Reddit reaction summarised the sentiment bluntly, pointing to Yiannopoulos' previous support for deportation and noting that he had himself overstayed his visa.

Why Was Yiannopoulos Deported?

Despite the political controversy surrounding his case, US authorities have presented the deportation as an immigration matter.

The Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos had remained in the country beyond the period authorised by his visa and had failed to appear at an immigration hearing.

He was then detained by ICE at the New Orleans airport and removed from the country shortly afterwards.

Trump administration border czar Tom Homan later rejected suggestions that Yiannopoulos had received preferential treatment because of his political connections. Homan said Yiannopoulos had overstayed his visa, missed his hearing and was subject to a final removal order. The speed of the process nevertheless became another major talking point online.

Yiannopoulos Says ICE Treatment Was 'Terrifying'

After returning to Britain, Yiannopoulos spoke publicly about his detention, describing the experience as deeply frightening. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he said he had been 'really terrified' and described the treatment he received from immigration authorities as brutal and humiliating.

He also claimed that officers treated him 'like a gang member' and alleged that he was denied access to food, a telephone and medical care during his detention. The experience appears to have dramatically changed his view of the Trump administration.

He Is Now 'Very Ashamed' of Supporting Trump

Perhaps the biggest political reversal came after Yiannopoulos returned to Britain.

Speaking to Piers Morgan, the former Trump supporter said he was 'very ashamed' that he had previously supported the US president. Yiannopoulos criticised the way he said he had been treated by immigration authorities and questioned the broader direction of Trump's administration.

The comments mark a remarkable departure from his earlier political persona. Yiannopoulos rose to prominence as one of Trump's more provocative supporters during the 2016 campaign, while his views on immigration helped establish him as a prominent figure within the broader far-right movement. His political influence later declined following a series of controversies and his resignation from Breitbart in 2017.
