The first-ever winner of the Netflix survival series Outlast has been arrested on a string of harrowing child sex crime charges, sending a shockwave through the reality television industry.

Paul Preece Jr, 51, was taken into custody by Knox County authorities in Tennessee on 6 March 2026, following the issuance of a capias warrant. Official jail records confirm the survivalist faces counts including rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, and attempted rape of a child.

Preece, who rose to fame in 2023 after splitting a £770,000 ($1m) prize in the Alaskan wilderness, is currently being held at the Knox County Jail on a $150,000 bond. If released, the court has mandated that he remain under strict GPS electronic monitoring pending further proceedings.

From Survivalist Champion To Criminal Defendant

Preece first gained widespread public attention in 2023 when he competed on Outlast, a Netflix survival competition series that challenges contestants to endure harsh conditions in the Alaskan wilderness. Sixteen amateur survivalists were dropped into remote terrain and forced to rely on teamwork and resourcefulness to outlast their competitors for a chance at a $1 million prize.

During the season, Preece began the competition as part of the Delta team but later joined the Charlie team, ultimately forming the winning trio alongside teammates Nick Radner and Seth Lueker. The group shared the prize after outlasting other competitors in the gruelling contest.

Following his television success, Preece listed himself on professional networks as a 'Reality TV Personality' and pursued ventures including a podcast called Between the Horns, where he interviewed fellow contestants about their experiences on the show.

Legal Status And Capias Warrant Details

According to inmate records accessed by entertainment outlets, Preece was charged with rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, and attempted rape of a child. These charges are among the most serious under Tennessee state law and typically require careful judicial review before a case can proceed to trial.

The arrest was made under a capias warrant, a court order frequently issued when a defendant fails to appear in court, violates the conditions of bond, or otherwise violates legal requirements. The issuance of such a warrant often reflects complexity in the legal process leading up to an arrest, but does not comment on guilt or innocence.

Authorities have not released further details about the alleged incidents or the alleged victim, and there appears to be no public statement from Preece or his legal representatives at this stage.

Netflix and Industry Silence

Despite the viral nature of the arrest, Netflix has remained silent. The streaming giant recently announced a third season of Outlast, which remains one of its top-performing unscripted titles. It is unclear if the current charges will impact the availability of the first season on the platform.

Preece's former employer, a polyurethane manufacturer, has also declined to comment on his current status. As of 9 March 2026, no trial date has been set, though a preliminary hearing is expected in the coming weeks.

Under Tennessee law, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

News of the arrest has reverberated across social media and entertainment news outlets. Some commentators have expressed disbelief that a winner of a popular Netflix competition show could face such allegations, while others have underlined the importance of due process and sober reporting in sensitive cases involving alleged crimes against a minor.

Preece's case remains in its early legal stages, with both local law enforcement and the courts controlling the flow of formal information. Cases of this nature, involving alleged sexual offences against minors, typically proceed with heightened confidentiality to protect the identities of any victims.
