Remember the satisfying click of those grey buttons and the monochrome glow of the screen? The device that defined a generation of portable gaming is making a spectacular comeback, not as a console, but as an incredible LEGO building set.

A new, almost 1:1 scale brick version of Nintendo's original Game Boy handheld, called the LEGO Game Boy, was just revealed, coinciding with San Diego Comic-Con.

A Brick-Built Blast From the Past

'At a scale of near 1:1, the LEGO Game Boy model building kit is a testament to a classic era in gaming and with authentic details and much-loved features is a nostalgic throwback to the classic system,' Nintendo stated in a recent blog post, describing their LEGO Game Boy model building kit.

The model includes a +Control Pad, A and B Buttons, and SELECT and START buttons, all of which are pressable, just like on the actual handheld. Its scale also allows for the recreation of nearly every other authentic external feature from the original Game Boy in LEGO, such as the contrast adjustment and volume dial, along with the Game Pak slot.

Authentic Details, Classic Feel

To fill those slots, the set lets you customise your display with interchangeable, brick-built Game Paks featuring The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening or Super Mario Land for the Game Boy.

Both have matching lenticular screens, plus the standard Nintendo start screen, creating the illusion of the handheld being powered on. Additionally, the LEGO set provides a buildable display stand for effortless display, according to a report by Nintendo Everything.

Nintendo also mentioned the set is 'designed for people who enjoy hands-on creative activities. ' This is part of a large assortment of LEGO sets for adult designers, and with step-by-step instructions, newcomers to LEGO can also enjoy the challenge.'

LEGO Game Boy Design

The set closely mirrors the original Game Boy in appearance, featuring a D-pad and the familiar A, B, Start, and Select buttons. It also includes contrast and volume dials on its sides. You have three choices for the display: a Nintendo start screen or gameplay images from the two games that come with the set.

The LEGO Game Boy is recommended for ages 18 and up, placing it in the category of LEGO sets for adults. IGN suggests this is likely because the nostalgic set targets individuals who grew up with a Game Boy. It is also important to note that, unlike some other kits, this model does not include light or sound features, and it cannot be used to play games.

This set is designed for display. To that end, it comes with a brick-built stand for the Game Boy replica itself. There's also a separate stand for whichever cartridge isn't currently slotted into the back of the device, seemingly in play.

LEGO Game Boy Pre-order, Price, Release Date

The LEGO Game Boy model building set officially went on pre-order today, 24 July. It will then be available for purchase from 1 October 2025, at LEGO stores, on LEGO.com, and through select major retailers globally. The set will be priced at $59.99 (£44.30).

A Legacy of Nintendo in LEGO

This isn't the first retro-themed Nintendo LEGO set the company has launched. The LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System appeared in 2020, and a pixelated, SNES-era LEGO Mario & Yoshi set followed last year. In addition, there are numerous play-focused LEGO Mario sets, along with LEGO Animal Crossing sets, a LEGO Great Deku Tree from Zelda, and many others.
