Mom Beat Her 2-Year-Old Daughter to Death, Then Asked for 'Afterlife' Photos, Before Being Convicted

Jeanie Ditty, a North Carolina mother, has been found guilty of first-degree murder more than ten years after her two-year-old daughter died from horrific injuries she caused. Her daughter, Macy Grace Ditty, suffered at least 40 separate physical blows and non-survivable brain injuries, eventually leading to her death in December 2015.

Ditty was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday, 20 August, following the conviction. She was also sentenced to 157 to 201 months for felonious child abuse causing serious bodily injury.

The case took years to reach a conclusion after an earlier trial in 2020 ended with a hung jury, despite jurors reportedly voting 10-2 in favour of finding her guilty. In the months before she was charged, Ditty connected with a photographer to take a series of unusual memorial photographs, including an imagined version of her daughter as an angel.

Mary Grace's Heartbreaking Death

The investigation surrounding Ditty and her daughter began on 2 December, 2015. Emergency responders took the two-year-old girl to Cape Fear Valley Regional Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where medical staff determined that she had suffered extensive physical abuse.

Macy was put through a CT scan, revealing brain injuries, which doctors deemed non-survivable. Meanwhile, investigators have since identified at least 40 separate physical blows to the child.

Prosecutors during the trial also stated that the injuries had been sustained within an eight-to-24-hour period. Ditty was the sole caregiver with access to Macy during these times, as Macy's father was serving in the military overseas, making the mother the prime suspect.

The child remained on life support for two days, and her father made an emergency journey back to the US. However, on 4 December, she was taken off life support. She would've turned three years old ten days later. Following this, Jeanie Ditty was charged with murder in March 2016.

An Eerie Photoshoot

Ditty approached photographer Sunny Jo, who was based in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and asked him to take a series of unusual memorial photographs. Among the photos was the aforementioned reimagining of her daughter as an angel.

Jo spoke at an interview later on, where he shared that Ditty was reportedly grieving when she reached out to him. She allegedly asked Jo to digitally edit her photos to appear as though Macy was still alive by superimposing an ethereal image of the child into scenes with Jeanie.

Perhaps the most unusual was of Jeanie sitting at Macy's gravesite while an angelic version of her daughter appeared beside her. Another photo showed the two-year-old reading a book on a picnic blanket while an image of the child appeared to look towards her mother.

According to Jo, he accepted the project as a gesture of sympathy. He was reportedly offered between $300 and $500 (£219 and £366), but declined the money. The photographs took on a deeply disturbing significance after investigators pursued the circumstances surrounding Macy's death.

A Conviction More Than 10 Years in the Making

Ditty's initial trial held in 2020 resulted in a deadlocked jury. Six years later, her trial finally brought the case to a conclusion, after the jury deliberated for less than three hours to find Jeanie Ditty guilty of first-degree murder. After the court's decision, she reportedly caused a disturbance, shouting and cursing at people present in the courtroom.

Moreover, the sentencing puts an end to a more than decade-long case that finally brings justice to an innocent two-year-old girl. Ditty will spend the rest of her life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
