A story claiming police drones armed with gear capable of "neutralising" suspects were to be rolled out in Canada has been exposed as a hoax.

The story claimed the drones would patrol tough neighbourhoods where it is not safe for officers to go.

The story even claimed the drones were to be equipped with facial recognition software for picking out targets and carry "non-lethal" poison gas and electric shock weaponry for taking down suspects.

The story echoed the film Robocop, in which a city hands over tough policing duties to a robot - with disastrous consequences.
