Riot police in Buenos Aires clashed with protesters who fired missiles and flares at them as they demonstrated outside the British embassy in the Argentinean capital on Monday.

Demonstrators wielding sticks and wearing scarves wrapped around their faces pulled down police barricades, which were later put back up. Extremists also set fire to a Union Jack flag and burned an effigy of Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge .

The protest came on the 30th anniversary of Argentina's 2 April 1982 invasion of the Falkland islands, which it claims as the Malvinas. Argentina has been intensifying its campaign to pressure Britain into sovereignty talks, a theme it pushes in every international forum. Despite the attention-grabbing images of protesters outside the British embassy on Monday, polls show zero appetite among Argentines for a military solution.
