Five-month-old baby hippopotamus Devi explored San Diego Zoo's pool with her mother, Funani, on 1 September, as visitors stopped to watch their aquatic interplay. Born on 23 March, the baby hippo paddled and dove through the pool, attracting the attention of curious visitors who could see the animals through an underground glass window.

Now comfortable swimming through the deepest parts of the pool, little Devi practises her barrel roll with her mother nearby watching. Devi will continue to nurse for up to a year but has begun to pick up and eat food that Funani is eating. The 30-year-old mother also gave birth in 2014 but that calf died several days later.
