A taxi driver is being questioned on suspicion of murder after he handed himself in and gave police two addresses where they found the corpses of two elderly widows.

Andrew Flood, 43, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the deaths of retired factory worker Margaret Biddolph, 78, and Annie Leyland, 88, who live less than a quarter of a mile apart in Southport, Merseyside.

Both victims were believed to have died during attempted burglaries.

Flood was kept in police cells overnight and his Southport home was searched the following day.

The women were reported to be regular clients of the private taxi firm Flood works for.

Post mortems were being carried out.
