The first pictures have emerged showing the aftermath of an incident that seemingly saw a speeding car plough into a group of pedestrians in New York's iconic Times Square.

The photos show the vehicle crashed at the side of the street, mounted on a bollard.

The New York City Fire Department said one person had died and at least 12 others were injured, with victims being treated by emergency workers.

Early reports suggest the driver "lost control" on 7th in Times Square at around noon local time (5pm BST).

The car crashed into a pole and came to rest at 45th Street and Broadway.

The driver is in custody and the area has been sealed off, according to the New York Police Department.

Police are not treating the incident as terror-related and are examining whether a drunk-driver may be responsible, CBS reported.

"Everybody was just running, everyone was concerned for their lives," a witness told local CBS.
