Splatoon
Splatoon is Nintendo's gloriously colourful and non-violent online shooter Nintendo

Nintendo's biggest game of the year so far and its most significant new IP in years has debuted at number two in the UK all-formats video game chart, according to data from Chart-Track. It is the fifth fastest-selling Wii U game to date.

Its sales also make Splatoon the fastest-selling new IP on the Wii U so far. While not exactly a remarkable feat by any means, it has outsold Ubisoft's ZombiU and eased some concerns that the game might flop.

Whether or not this first week success translates to long-term success remains to be seen, as Wii U games tend to drop off after strong first week sales. Nintendo has certainly gone all in with its take on the online multiplayer shooter however, with an extensive and expensive ad campaign.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, from the RPG fantasy series, reclaims its top spot for a second week, with the majority of sales once again being the PS4 version – which claimed 61% of the total, compared to Xbox One's 36% and PC's 3%.

The rest of the chart consists of numerous familiar faces. Grand Theft Auto 5 is at three and Fifa 15 at four. Last week's surprise second place game Farming Simulator 15 falls to fifth, with Battlefield Hardline behind it at sixth and Project Cars falling two spots to seventh.

Destiny – boosted by the House of Wolves expansion pack – is at eight, ahead of Mortal Kombat X at nine and Minecraft: Xbox Edition at 10.
