Thousands of gothic rock fans descended on the seaside town of Whitby in North Yorkshire for the Whitby Goth Weekend. Started in 1994, the festival has grown into one of the biggest goth music events in the world, and is now held twice a year.

Performers at the Halloween 2014 festival included 1980s acts Heaven 17, Visage and Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers.

Whitby was chosen as the location of the festival for its Dracula connection (part of Bram Stoker's vampire novel is set in the town).

AFP photographer Oli Scarff roamed the streets and graveyards of Whitby, hunting for vampires.
