3 Big Reasons Why US Retirees Are Choosing Wyoming and South Dakota Over Florida
Lower living costs, safer communities and reliable healthcare are quietly reshaping America's retirement map

For decades, Florida was the default answer to a simple question: where will you retire? Sunshine, beaches, and golf courses made the choice seem obvious. Yet, a quiet shift is underway. Increasingly, retirees are looking north and west — not to the coast, but to wide skies, lower costs, and smaller communities.
New data from WalletHub's Best and Worst States to Retire 2026 report shows Wyoming ranked first overall, Florida second, and South Dakota third.
1. Financial Security Comes First
When people retire, they often live on a fixed income. For many households, every dollar must stretch further. According to WalletHub, 65% of non-retired adults say their retirement savings aren't on track, which makes affordability one of the most important factors in choosing a retirement location.
Wyoming ranks highest overall and falls in the more affordable half of the US for retirees' living expenses. The state is considered highly friendly to retired taxpayers and has no estate or inheritance tax. It also has the fifth-lowest annual cost of homemaker services, helping seniors maintain independence at lower costs.
Similarly, South Dakota does not have an estate or inheritance tax. It boasts the 13th-lowest poverty rate among residents aged 65+ and the fourth-lowest percentage of seniors facing food insecurity, making it another financially stable option for retirees.
Florida still offers tax advantages, including no state income tax. However, WalletHub notes that the state's overall cost of living is relatively high compared with many other states, which may require retirees to budget more carefully.
2. Safer Streets and Stronger Communities
Many retirees seek not just savings but peace of mind. Wyoming performs strongly in safety and community measures. The state has the fifth-lowest violent crime rate, ranks 10th in the nation for elder-abuse protections, and places 14th for residents who regularly do favours for neighbours. These indicators suggest close-knit communities and strong social support networks.
South Dakota also scores well socially. It has one of the lowest rates of social isolation among older residents, which can contribute to better well-being and overall quality of life during retirement. Florida, meanwhile, offers many amenities, entertainment options, and active lifestyle opportunities. However, retirees who prefer quieter surroundings or smaller communities may find states like Wyoming and South Dakota better suited to their preferences.
3. Health Care That Works When You Need It
Good weather is pleasant, but reliable healthcare is essential. South Dakota stands out in this area, ranking #4 in the United States for healthcare services. The state has highly rated geriatric hospitals, a strong supply of family medicine physicians, and a low share of seniors experiencing frequent mental distress.
Wyoming ranks 33rd overall for healthcare, placing it near the middle nationally. However, its low homemaker service costs can make ageing at home more affordable for many seniors. Florida ranks 27th for healthcare and receives more funding per senior from the Older Americans Act than all but two other states. This funding supports services such as transportation, nutrition programmes, and homemaker assistance.
A Different Picture of Retirement
Retirement priorities are shifting. Comfort today often means stability rather than spectacle. Wyoming offers affordability, tax friendliness, and strong safety measures. South Dakota provides solid healthcare and supportive communities. Both states give retirees more control over their finances and fewer daily concerns.
Florida remains a popular and attractive retirement destination. However, for those focused on lower costs, strong community ties, and overall stability, Wyoming and South Dakota are increasingly appealing alternatives.
