Shares in Anglo American were up on the FTSE 100 in afternoon trading after the mining group reported significant increases in production during the third quarter ended 30 September.

Kumba Iron Ore production increased 14 per cent to a record 12.5 million tonnes, export metallurgical coal production rose 12 per cent to 4.5 million tonnes and export thermal coal production from South Africa was up 10 per cent to 4.6 million tonnes.

The group also saw copper production increase 12 per cent to 157,300 tonnes and nickel production jump 38 per cent to 9,000 tonnes.

However production of refined platinum was flat at 649,000 ounces and diamond production decreased 31 per cent to 6.4 million carats.

During the period Anglo America acquired a 40 per cent shareholding in De Beers for $5.2 billion and sold a 25.4 per cent shareholding in Anglo American Sur for two billion dollars. The group also issued corporate bonds worth $2.3 billion in the US and European markets.

By 12:50 shares in Anglo American were up 0.37 per cent on the FTSE 100 to 1,884.00 pence per share.
