Arsenal hero Robert Pires believes there are real comparisons between record signing Mesut Ozil and French great Zinedine Zidane.

The Germany international has adjusted to life in the Premier League with consummate ease following his deadline day arrival from Real Madrid, instantly providing the moments of brilliance that see many recognise him as the finest number 10 on the planet.

Within just six appearances for Arsene Wenger's side, Ozil's impact has been instantaneous; providing five assists for his teammates in addition to scoring his first goal with the most exquisite of finishes against Napoli in the Champions League.

The 24-year-old's flawless vision, unerring awareness and sublime first touch see Pires liken him to one of the greatest players of all time in Zidane, qualities that also make him the catalyst needed to restore Arsenal to the top of English football.

"I think that Arsene Wenger and Arsenal and signed a world class player in Mesut Ozil," Pires told Arsenal's official magazine.

"He is, in my opinion, the best no. 10 in Europe. He has proven it with Real Madrid and with Germany. For me, he is exactly the player the team was missing.

"It is an amazing coup that Arsenal made this summer not only in football terms as Ozil will strengthen the team, but it will give the rest of the squad more confidence and opponents will fear Arsenal again. But also in terms of prestige as it proves that Arsenal are still a massive club.

"If I had to compare Ozil with someone I played with in my career, I think I would say that he has a bit of Zinedine Zidane in him, in terms of vision, touch and genius to make others play around him.

"Like all Arsenal fans who have been expecting a big signing like that for a number of years, I am very happy he is a Gunner now because he will be fantastic for us.

Ozil's arrival at the Emirates has by no coincidence fuelled their exhilarating start of the season which sees them sat top the Premier League table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
