It was Mercedes' 19th consecutive pole position with Lewis Hamilton qualifying on P1 ahead of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

It was a sort of déjà vu for Ferrari, as for the second consecutive race they lost a car in Q1. It was Sebastian Vettel in Canada, and this time it was Kimi Raikkonen.

Qualifying review

Lewis Hamilton had his fair share of luck as he grabbed yet another pole position ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg in a rain affected session at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

The Briton, who was on provisional pole with two minutes to go in Q3, spun on turn 1 in his final hot lap, leaving the door open for his German teammate.

Rosberg was on a quick lap and looked certain to take pole, but pushed too hard as he went off track in the final turn to hand the reigning World Champion his seventh pole position of the season.

Kimi Raikkonen's wretched luck in qualifying continued, as he ran out of time to set a fast lap in a rain interrupted Q1 and qualified 18th on the grid.

It clearly looked like a team error as the other Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel managed to qualify in third place just behind the Mercedes'.

Nico Hulkenburg put in an impressive lap to split the Williams duo, who occupy fourth and sixth on the grid, with the Force India driver in fifth.

The Red Bull Racing Team are not having the best of times at their home circuit with Daniil Kvyat just managing to finish in the top 10, while teammate Daniel Ricciardo could only manage 14th place.

However, both the Red Bull's and the McLaren-Honda drivers have been handed penalties for an engine change, which will see the quartet starting from the back of the grid.
