A Baltimore couple will face life in prison for charges of child abuse, one of which resulted in death.

Bernice and Gerald Byrd pleaded guilty to two charges of first-degree child abuse, including first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of Zona, their five-year-old daughter. The Baltimore City State's Attorney confirmed the guilty plea on 26 February, via press release.

The update comes more than a year after police learned about the Byrd children's desperate state. On 14 October 2024, officers responded to a report of an 'unresponsive' five-year-old victim inside the Byrd's Baltimore residence.

Victim Discovered Dead During Welfare Check

The caller identified the victim as Bernice and Gerald's daughter Zona, who was at that time on the second floor, lying on a bed. 'The victim was unresponsive and cold to the touch,' per the press release. At 12:50 p.m. that day, Zona was pronounced dead.

'The deceased victim's body appeared severely emaciated and extremely malnourished,' according to the responding medics. 'The clothes she was wearing were observed to be much too large for her, and detectives later reported that she had no muscle tone.'

Zona was one of four children police found at the Byrd's home. One was Zona's six-year-old brother, 'who appeared emaciated and could barely stand or walk when he was discovered.'

Evidence of Deliberate Starvation

Investigation confirmed that Bernice and Gerald had been starving their children, to the point that one of them 'was seen going through garbage at their school in an attempt to find food.' What made the situation more heartbreaking was that there was ample food in the house. The Byrd children suffered under their parents' neglect.

'Detectives questioned both parents about the last time [Zona] was provided food and nourishment,' per the press announcement, 'but neither would take responsibility for feeding the child, and neither could account for when they last fed the victim.'

A salad was found in the refrigerator at the time of the incident, and the freezer was stocked with frozen meat. Non-perishable food items were also found in Bernice and Gerald's locked bedroom closet.

The three surviving children were taken to the hospital and fed. Zona's six-year-old brother, who weighed about 16 kilograms when he was found, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was discharged on 26 October 2024.

Zona Byrd only weighed around eight kilograms, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner stated. There was no evidence of physical trauma that might have contributed to her death.

Guilty Plea and Path to Justice

'No punishment will be as severe for these defendants as living with the knowledge that they murdered their innocent child,' State Attorney Ivan J. Bates asserted in a statement. 'Today's guilty plea does ensure the safety of Zona's siblings, who are also victims of their parents' horrific actions. As a father, the facts of this case are nauseating, and my heart continues to ache for Zona, who is gone from us far too soon.'

Zona's funeral was held on 28 October 2024, according to a GoFundMe campaign created for her siblings' benefit.
