'POV: Suicide Fighter': FBI Details Chilling Plot of Man Drawn to ISIS Beheading Clips

Michael Sam Teekaye Jr., 22, of Maryland, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after federal authorities said he plotted to travel to Africa to join ISIS after becoming immersed in the terrorist organisation's propaganda. Authorities also alleged that the man trained with firearms.

Teekaye was arrested at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on 14 October 2024. Authorities said he had prepared to fly overseas, planning to travel through Turkey and Ethiopia before crossing into Somalia to join ISIS.

The convicted man was sentenced in July 2026 after pleading guilty to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation.

Now, the FBI has revealed new details about its years-long investigation and described Teekaye's online activity. The 22-year-old's immersion in ISIS allegedly escalated to him communicating with operatives, purchasing ammunition and preparing for what authorities feared could become an attack in the United States.

'POV: Dhib Inghamasi'

Investigators said Teekaye watched ISIS beheading videos and became increasingly immersed in the group's ideology. The 22-year-old allegedly communicated online with operatives from the terrorist group and posted materials designed to emulate their propaganda.

A report also stated that concerns surrounding Teekaye dated back years. At 16, he had his first meeting with the FBI after making comments about idolising terrorist leaders, according to investigators.

Perhaps the most concerning online activity of Teekaye was an Instagram post that showed him practising with an assault rifle, with the caption 'POV: Dhib inghamasi'. Investigators said the Arabic caption refers to a suicide fighter.

Concerns for Real-World Attacks Grew

According to prosecutors, Teekaye told an undercover officer in 2023 that he wanted to travel to Africa and fight for ISIS. He also described a 'plan B' involving an attack in the United States against Jews and people who support Israel.

According to court documents, Teekaye purchased ammunition and shooting-range time on three occasions between May and June 2024. In July, he attempted to purchase a Kalashnikov K-9 9mm rifle, but the transaction was denied due to his probation in a separate case.

Prosecutors alleged that the Maryland man's plans started to become more concrete in the months leading to his arrest. According to them, Teekaye told an undercover officer that he had engaged with a Somali ISIS fighter about his plans to travel to Somalia. He also sent screenshots of an Ethiopian e-Visa he said he obtained from the fighter and later reported receiving airline tickets.

Teekaye's Continued Concerning Statements

After his arrest, prosecutors said he continued making statements about carrying out violence after his release from prison. Investigators also found searches on his phone concerning Jewish and Israeli individuals and organisations in Howard County, as well as searches about breaking into a home and escaping after a murder.

Teekaye pleaded guilty in January 2026. In July, US District Judge Adam B. Abelson sentenced him to 15 years in prison followed by lifetime supervised release.

The FBI said the investigation demonstrated the importance of identifying potential terrorist threats before they develop into attacks. FBI Special Agent Thomas Szymanski told a news outlet that authorities are already looking ahead to Teekaye's eventual release, citing statements he made after his arrest about attacking once he gets out.
