Chelsea have confirmed they have agreed a deal to sign Werder Bremen attacking midfielder Marko Marin. The German has agreed personal terms with the Blues and will join them in the summer on a five-year deal. The transfer fee is reported to be in the range of £5.5 million to £7 million. However, neither club has made the financial details public.
"Chelsea Football Club have today (Saturday) agreed to sign Marko Marin from Werder Bremen. Both clubs have agreed a fee and the 23-year-old midfielder has agreed personal terms. Marin, a German international, will join Chelsea in the summer," read a statement on the club's Web site. The statement also said the player was signed for his ability to play both on the wing and through the middle.
Marin made his Germany debut four years ago and was also part of the 2010 World Cup squad that reached the semi-finals. The Serbian-born player, whose contract at Bremen was to run out next summer, had to spend much of this season on the sidelines due to injury issues.
"I had a really good time with Werder together with many great guys here, and I have lots of nice memories, but of course I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League with such an established club," the Guardian quoted the player as saying.
Bremen boss Klaus Allofs also confirmed that Marin was leaving Germany to join the London club after the end of the season.
"I can confirm that [he signed a five-year-contract]. The last formalities were sorted out today and I can confirm that he will be a Chelsea player next yearl" Goal.com quoted Allofs as saying.
Meanwhile, there are several reports that suggest the Blues' young Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku will join Bremen on a season-long loan, as part of the deal. However, Allofs moved to deny any such rumours.
"Romelu Lukaku is definitely a player that interests us, but he will not leave England," he said.
Marin, who joined Bremen from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2009, has 13 goals and 29 assists for the club from 111 appearances in all competitions. He has represented Germnay 16 times and has scored once.
