Police Hunt for Mysterious 'Bigfoot' Man in a Small Town Ends in Unexpected Twist

Residents in the small coastal town of Damariscotta, Maine, were left wondering whether the legendary 'Bigfoot' had finally emerged from the wilderness after a large, hair-covered figure was spotted in public.

Several people reportedly photographed the mysterious figure, prompting a series of calls to local police. The unusual number of reports was enough for officers to launch what amounted to an impromptu Bigfoot investigation.

The sightings quickly became a talking point in the community, with residents speculating about whether the creature could have been Sasquatch, a Yeti or the mythical Bigfoot.

Given Damariscotta's relatively small size and its reputation as a quiet coastal community, the incident was outrageous. Rather than investigating a conventional criminal complaint, police were suddenly faced with reports of an enormous hairy figure apparently roaming the town.

The department later acknowledged the unusually high volume of calls in a statement, adding to the light-hearted nature of the incident.

Officer Tracks Down Mysterious Creature

Officer William Smith was tasked with finding the reported creature. He did not need to embark on a lengthy expedition through Maine's forests, however.

Smith located the supposed Bigfoot sitting calmly on Main Street. Rather than treating the encounter as a conventional police stop, the officer sat down with the figure and began a conversation. Bigfoot Turns Out To Be a Man in Costume

Smith's investigation eventually produced a decidedly less mysterious answer.

The figure was not a previously undiscovered creature or a visitor from the Maine wilderness. Beneath the thick layer of artificial fur was simply a man wearing a Bigfoot costume.

Police found no evidence that the costumed visitor had committed an offence or posed a threat to the public. He was therefore not arrested.

The episode nevertheless gave residents an unusual story to tell. The incident also tapped into America's enduring fascination with Bigfoot, a creature traditionally described as a large, hairy, human-like being supposedly inhabiting remote forests.

Sightings have been reported for decades, particularly in heavily wooded parts of the United States and Canada, but researchers have never established the creature's existence.

For Damariscotta officers, the discovery may have been somewhat less exciting than initially hoped. Some may have secretly wished the investigation would produce the kind of extraordinary discovery capable of making national headlines.

Instead, their Bigfoot hunt ended with a much more familiar suspect: a man in a costume, sitting in the middle of town.

There may be no law against being unusually hairy, even when it is enough to send an entire town searching for Bigfoot.
