'I'm the One That's Ill': Delta Captain Falls Sick Mid-Flight and Diverts Plane to Detroit

A Delta Air Lines captain fell ill at the controls of a Los Angeles to Boston flight and told air traffic control 'I'm the one that's ill' before the aircraft diverted to Detroit so he could be taken to hospital.

Delta Flight 437, carrying 147 people, was diverted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Tuesday, 25 August, after the captain reported a medical emergency. The Boeing 757-200 landed safely at about 5.30pm local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The sick crew member was then taken to a local hospital.

Captain's Illness Prompts Unscheduled Detroit Landing

The captain's condition and the nature of his illness have not been disclosed. After landing, Delta arranged a replacement crew and the aircraft continued to Boston.

Flight-tracking data showed the plane reached Boston at about 9.04pm, later than originally scheduled. The flight departed Los Angeles at around 11am local time and was scheduled to land in Boston about five-and-a-half hours later.

Former Pilot Says Diversion Drills Are Standard Procedure

The incident became public through an air traffic control recording of the approach to Detroit. The pilot identified himself as the captain and told controllers: 'This is the captain. I'm the one that's ill. I'm gonna taxi the jet to the gate, and then I need to go to the hospital'.

Controllers directed the aircraft towards an exit that would provide the quickest route to the gate. The exchange indicated that the captain remained able to communicate and taxi the aircraft after landing.

Former military and commercial pilot Matthew 'Whiz' Buckley told CBS News Boston that it was not unusual for the pilot who was not flying to handle radio communications, allowing the other pilot to concentrate on operating the aircraft.

He said crews are trained to divert when a pilot becomes incapacitated or believes they may be unable to continue safely. The aircraft, registered as N707TW, was almost directly on the route to Detroit when the diversion was made, according to aviation reporting.

Flight-tracking records show it landed at Detroit and reached the gate within minutes.

Flight Reaches Boston Three Hours Late After Crew Swap

The Wayne County Airport Authority said its airport fire department responded to a medical situation involving a person aboard the diverted aircraft.

The individual was transported to hospital after the plane reached the gate.

Officials did not identify the person or provide details about the medical emergency.

Delta confirmed that Flight 437 landed safely in Detroit and that a new crew was assigned before the aircraft continued to Boston.

The airline apologised to passengers for the disruption. The incident did not result in injuries to passengers or a reported aircraft safety problem.

The flight was diverted so the captain could receive medical attention, while the remaining crew and airline arrangements allowed the journey to continue. For the 147 passengers aboard, what began as a routine cross-country flight ended with an unscheduled landing in Detroit and a replacement crew before the aircraft resumed its journey to Boston.
