Discord Age Verification Could Cost Users Their Favourite Servers — Here's Why
Users must verify age via ID or AI facial scan to access adult content

Discord has announced that it will introduce global age verification across its platform starting next month. Users who do not verify their age will automatically have accounts set to a teen-friendly experience. This will restrict access to age-restricted servers, stage channels, and adult content, including servers users were already members of prior to the roll-out.
Savannah Badalich, Discord's global head of product policy, explained that these servers will appear as blacked-out screens until users verify that they are adults. She added that users will also face additional content filters and warnings for direct messages from unfamiliar accounts.
Age Verification Methods Explained
As announced by Discord, the new verification process provides two main options for users. The first uses facial age estimation through an AI-powered video selfie. Discord has said the analysis occurs entirely on the user's device and no images are stored. If the AI's age estimate is incorrect, users can appeal or verify with a government-issued ID.
The second option involves submitting an ID to a third-party vendor. Discord has assured users that images of identification documents are deleted quickly, usually immediately after verification.
Following an October 2025 data breach involving a previous vendor, the company now uses a different partner for ID verification. Badalich confirmed that the system does not perform biometric scanning or retain personal information such as names or addresses.
Privacy Concerns and Potential Risks
Despite safeguards, some users have expressed concern about privacy when submitting identification. Adult users may avoid verification because of past security incidents and worries about their personal data. Discord acknowledges these concerns but maintains that the measures are designed to improve online safety, particularly for minors.
Additionally, Discord will employ an age inference model for some users. This AI tool estimates age based on behavioural signals, activity patterns, and metadata, allowing some adults to bypass facial or ID verification if confidence in their age is high.
Industry Context and Previous Trials
Discord's global roll-out follows earlier tests in the UK and Australia, where users found ways to bypass age checks. Badalich stated that the company addressed loopholes quickly, but expects continued attempts to circumvent the verification system. The move also reflects a wider trend among online platforms to enforce stricter child safety regulations, driven by international legal requirements.
Day-to-Day Impact on Users
The teen-by-default settings will primarily affect access to adult content and age-restricted communities. Users who do not complete age verification will be blocked from joining new age-restricted servers and will see previously joined servers that contain adult content obscured with a black screen. They will also be unable to participate in Discord's livestream-style stage channels, which are often used for discussions and events.
Direct messages from unfamiliar accounts will be automatically filtered into a separate inbox, reducing the risk of unwanted contact. Friend requests from users outside their network will carry warning prompts to alert them to potential safety concerns. Even content that is not explicitly adult but is deemed sensitive by Discord's filters may be hidden until verification is completed.
Discord has acknowledged the potential impact on its user base, stating: 'We do expect that there will be some sort of hit there, and we are incorporating that into what our planning looks like.'
The company is also exploring ways to streamline the verification process and provide alternative methods, such as AI-based age inference, to ensure users can regain access to their favourite servers and continue using the platform's full range of features.
