Discord is preparing to enforce a global age verification system from early March that will require users to confirm their age using a face scan or a government‑issued ID before accessing adult content. The new measures are designed to protect younger users but have prompted backlash from privacy advocates and Discord communities worried about the safety of personal data.

Under the new rules, all users will initially be placed into a teen‑appropriate experience. Discord has said that only verified adults will be able to join age‑restricted communities and view un-blurred sensitive material. Users who do not complete the age verification process will also be unable to receive direct messages from people they do not know.

How Discord's New System Works

Discord's age verification allows two methods of confirmation. Users may upload a photo of a valid ID, such as a passport or driver's licence, or they may take a brief video selfie. The selfie will be analysed by artificial intelligence to estimate the person's age. Discord has insisted that the process will not retain face scans, and uploaded ID photos will be deleted once age is confirmed.

The company has emphasised that it will not store biometric data or identification documents after verification is complete. This assurance has been repeated in official statements as part of efforts to calm user concerns over data privacy.

Critics, however, remain uneasy, pointing to an incident in October when official ID photos for approximately 70,000 users were potentially exposed after a security breach at an age‑verification partner firm. Benvie also suggested that the initiative could have mixed effects on user behaviour. Some users may be deterred by verification requirements, while others might be drawn to Discord for its stronger safety posture compared with other social platforms.

A key component of Discord's update is its teen‑by‑default settings, which are intended to limit what underage users can see and with whom they can interact. Under these settings, unverified users will see only content deemed appropriate for teenagers and will face restrictions on communication from unknown contacts.

The change reflects broader industry trends in online safety, as major platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Roblox implement stricter age verification and default safety controls. Discord's chief executive, Jason Citron, was among tech leaders questioned about child safety at a US Senate hearing in 2024, highlighting increased regulatory and public scrutiny of age‑related safeguards.
