Donald Trump Gives Laughable Excuse After Snoozing Through Cabinet Meeting as Health Concerns Mount
Trump blames boredom for closed eyes during cabinet meeting.

The atmosphere inside the Cabinet Room shifted from serious policy discussion to unintentional comedy on Thursday as President Donald Trump attempted to dispel persistent rumours about his stamina. Faced with mounting questions regarding his tendency to drift off during official proceedings, the 79-year-old Commander-in-Chief offered a defence that left many observers raising their eyebrows rather than nodding in agreement.
In a display of characteristic defiance, Trump insisted that he had not fallen asleep during his previous meeting with top administration officials but had merely closed his eyes to escape the tedium of the event.
Boredom Blamed for Presidential Shuteye
During his latest gathering with cabinet members, Trump wasted little time addressing the optical gaffe that had circulated widely in December. He admitted that he closed his eyes but firmly rejected the notion that he was dozing.
Instead, he pinned the blame squarely on the nature of the meeting itself, describing the previous session as a 'boring as hell' that simply failed to hold his interest.
'The last time we had a press conference, it lasted for three hours, and some people said he closed his eyes. Look, it got pretty boring,' Trump said. The President's candour regarding his own administration's proceedings highlights a peculiar dynamic within the West Wing, where officials often take turns praising the leader at length. Trump noted that the Thursday meeting would be kept shorter to avoid a repeat of the incident.
'Blinking' Defence Raises Eyebrows in Room
In an effort to prove his alertness, the President provided a somewhat theatrical demonstration of his "blinking" technique. As his top advisers looked on, some laughing at the spectacle, Trump shut his eyes to illustrate how his critics had misinterpreted his facial expressions. He argued that the cameras had merely caught him at an inopportune moment during a long blink, rather than in a state of slumber.
'Some of them got me in a blink,' Trump claimed. He went on to suggest that the media had deliberately frozen the footage to create a false narrative. 'You know when you go like,' Trump said, shutting his eyes. ' And they took me at the closed segment of my cycle. They said, "He's sleeping." '
Despite his insistence, video footage from the December meeting showed his eyes closed for extended periods, far longer than a typical blink. The President, however, maintained that his momentary retreats behind closed eyelids were a deliberate choice. 'I just closed them because I wanted to get the hell out of here,' he said.
Officials Unlikely to Let Boss Doze Off
Trump sought to bolster his defence by bringing his cabinet members into the fold. He joked that if he had truly been snoozing, the officials seated nearest to him—Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth—would have intervened immediately. 'They'd be knocking me, "Come on, you got to wake up, boss,"' Trump insisted.
This assertion, however, contrasts with the visual evidence from the meeting in question. Trump appeared to struggle to keep his eyes open specifically while Rubio was speaking about the war in Ukraine, a critical foreign policy issue.
Cameras focused on the President showed him with his eyes shut for a prolonged period while the top diplomat spoke next to him. Similar footage captured him appearing to doze off as Hegseth took his turn to speak, casting doubt on the idea that his neighbours would have been comfortable nudging the President awake.
Trump: “We're not going to go through the whole table because the last time we had a press conference, it lasted for three hours, and some people said he closed his eyes. Look, it got pretty boring…I just closed them because I wanted to get the hell out of here. I didn't sleep.” pic.twitter.com/uL0P4FEQ3d

Pattern of Behaviour Amid Age Concerns
The incident is not isolated, fuelling ongoing discussions about the president's age and fitness for office as he approaches his 80th birthday. Trump has been spotted with his eyes closed during various other high-profile events, including roundtable discussions and briefings inside the Oval Office. Earlier this month, he was captured sitting behind the Resolute desk with his eyes shut while officials discussed the importance of whole milk.
Trump addressed these health concerns and the sleeping allegations in an interview with New York magazine released this week. He reiterated his stance that the sessions are simply 'boring as hell'.
'I have to sit back and listen, and I move my hand so that people will know I'm listening. I'm hearing every word, and I can't wait to get out,' Trump said. To counter the narrative of low energy, the President also pointed to his nocturnal habits, noting that he often posts rapidly on Truth Social in the middle of the night when most people are asleep.
