Elderly DoorDasher Seen Struggling to Deliver Order Sparks Viral GoFundMe — Nearly $600K Raised to Help Him Retire
How a ring camera recording changed Richard's life

Footage from a Ring doorbell camera in Manchester, Tennessee, captured 78-year-old Richard navigating a set of porch steps with visible difficulty, his frame bent slightly under the weight of a delivery order.
That moment, shared on Facebook by the homeowner, drew more than four million views and prompted a GoFundMe campaign that has since raised nearly £475,000 ($600,000), enough to allow the elderly deliveryman to step back from work entirely.
How a Ring Camera Recording Changed Richard's Life
The homeowner, Brittany Smith, was struck by the sight of an elderly man labouring to complete a task often undertaken by much younger workers. Feeling a deep sense of empathy, she decided to use her platform to highlight his situation.
Brittany launched the campaign after learning that Richard had returned to work following his wife's unexpected redundancy. The couple needed to cover monthly expenses and medical costs. 'Let's help Richard go back into retirement!!' she wrote.
She shared the campaign on Facebook alongside the footage. 'He is precious and he is not working because he wants to, he's working because he has to,' she wrote.
The response was swift. The post garnered over four million views and donations surged past initial expectations within days. The total eventually reached nearly £475,000 ($600,000), providing Richard with a financial buffer that would allow him to stop relying on delivery apps to pay his bills.

'It's Taking a Lot of Pressure Off of Us'
Richard and his wife, Brenda, spoke about their situation during an interview with local station WSMV4. The couple explained that they had been drawn into the gig economy following a series of financial setbacks.
Brenda lost her job unexpectedly, leaving the household without a stable income and struggling to cover basic expenses. 'When you're in your mid-70s, there's not exactly a line of people waiting to hire you,' she said.
Despite his age and physical limitations, Richard felt he had no choice but to take up work with DoorDash to bridge the gap. For over a year, the pair made deliveries together.
The couple were taken aback by the scale of support from strangers. They intend to use the funds to step back from work and spend time together after 56 years of marriage.
'Sometimes you just look at all the things that you need to pay or need to do, and if it don't, you're going to end up in the hospital or somewhere with something even more expensive than that,' Brenda said. 'It takes off a lot.'
Richard echoed his wife's sentiments. 'We appreciate every one of them because it's taking a lot of pressure off of us,' he said, adding that it's 'making life livable once again.'
Public Reaction to the Plight of Ageing Workers
The story prompted a broader conversation on social media about the state of retirement and the financial pressures that leave older workers with little choice but to remain employed.
'I hope you and your wife get the retirement you deserve! My grandparents are my best friends and they are about the same age, so when I saw this my heart broke for you. I pray you're able to live comfortably forever!' one commenter wrote on the GoFundMe page.
'Wishing you the very best retirement Richard,' another added.
Richard's case serves as a reminder of the financial vulnerabilities many elderly people face today. While his situation has reached a positive resolution, the conversation online has since turned to the systemic issues that leave seniors with no choice but to keep working.
