Social network site Facebook has introduced over 50 new gender definitions for its users to select, including androgynous, bi-gender, cisgender, intersex, gender fluid and transsexual. Users now also have the option to choose their preferred pronoun: him, her or them.

The company said the changes were aimed at giving people more choice in how they describe themselves. Facebook worked closely with gay and transgender acitivst groups to compile the new list of gender identity options, some of whom have long been lobbying for the site to increase the options available.

Before this major overhaul, the only options available to users were male, female, or to hide your gender altogether.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has long been publicly supportive of gay rights, marching with other Facebook employees in San Francisco's gay pride parade last year.
