Fans of the Game of Thrones universe have been eagerly waiting for news on the next chapter since the second season of House of the Dragon debuted in June 2024. After months of anticipation, the long wait could finally be near to an end, with high expectations for a summer return.

Although a premiere date has not yet been officially confirmed, the third season is widely expected to arrive during summer 2026. HBO has already confirmed that the series will continue beyond the third season and renewed it for a fourth season.

Release Speculation Builds as Filming Wraps

Fans of both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones have also been treated to another story from the same universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is set to air its finale this weekend on HBO and HBO Max. With the first season concluding, many viewers expect an announcement about House of the Dragon Season 3 to follow soon after.

Production on the third season began in March 2025 and has been wrapped, leaving the release announcement as the main milestone fans are waiting for. Online speculation suggests the debut could come later this summer, possibly in August, though some fans believe it may arrive earlier.

Despite the wait, expectations remain high. The upcoming season has been widely tipped to deliver the most epic showcase in TV history, with viewers bracing for the long awaited dragon vs. dragon conflict known as the Battle of the Gullet.

In a recent appearance on the Escape Hatch podcast, the series's director Loni Peristere said: 'It's coming up sooner than we think, but not soon enough. We're really getting close.' The comment fuelled speculation that the release could arrive earlier than expected, possibly in June or July.

Although he did not reveal a specific date, Peristere also hinted at the scale of the new season, saying: 'I'm going to plug season 3 as maybe the most epic season of television ever made.' He continues: 'Epic is written on every frame of film this season. I'm really proud of the scale.'

Trailer Tease and Early Details

For now, an official trailer has not yet been released to offer a first full look at what lies ahead. However, it appears that a teaser was reportedly shown to Brazilian press at an HBO Max Upfront event in São Paulo. While the footage has not been made available to viewers, a description circulated online and was shared by Winter is Coming last November:

'@Targ_Loyalist over on X translated the description of the trailer: "The teaser centers on the divided state of Westeros. Some back Aemond as the rightful king, while others stand behind Rhaenyra. We get a glimpse of Aegon, his appearance drastically changed after Rook's Rest last season, his face now heavily scarred. We also see Aemond embracing his mother, Alicent, followed by quick flashes of several characters: Otto Hightower, Ser Criston Cole, and Daemon Targaryen. Daemon, in particular, is shown gearing up for a major battle."'

Cast and Production

When it comes to casting, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed returning and new cast members when filming began last year. The series continues to adapt Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin.

Returning stars include Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra, Matt Smith as Daemon, Olivia Cooke as Alicent, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon. They are joined by new cast members including Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin and Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly.

As anticipation continues to build, fans are now waiting for HBO to confirm a premiere date and release the first official trailer. When released, it will be available to watch in the UK through the streaming service NOW or through digital purchases.
