Manchester United are reportedly set to have a managerial change after the end of the season and Louis van Gaal is likely to be replaced by Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician wants Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to be his first signing at Old Trafford in the summer.

Mourinho was sacked from his job at Chelsea last December and he was replaced by Guus Hiddink the same month. According to The Sun, he remains confident the Red Devils' job is his and has already started preparing his plans for the 20-time English champions.

United are fifth on the table and after their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, they are six points behind fourth place Manchester City. Van Gaal's future has come under threat on several occasions, especially when the Red Devils went without a win in all competitions in December.

The Dutchman was furious when asked about the growing speculation over Mourinho replacing him at Old Trafford following United's 1-1 draw. According to the BBC, United held talks with the ex-Inter Milan's camp over a possibility of replacing Van Gaal in the summer.

Mourinho has admitted that he will return to management in England and the Telegraph reports that he will get the United job, if Van Gaal is sacked or leaves the club. The former Chelsea boss has identified that the Red Devils' back four needs to be strengthened for the next season.

United have Chris Smalling and Daley Blind as the first choice centre-backs and the duo have impressed in that role. In addition to this, they have Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo as the other two central defenders in the squad, who are not recovering from their respective injuries.

Mourinho has coached Varane when he was at Real as he brought the France international to Santiago Bernabeu from Lens in 2011. Now he is looking to convince the centre-back to join him at United, which could potentially be Mourinho's next job in management.
