Overview

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori led Simone Bolelli 6-1, 7-5, 2-1 when rain stopped play on Sunday, with the Japan-born player showing just why he is so highly rated in tennis circles. Despite not winning a title so far this season, he has played tennis of the highest standard and has entertained fans with his commitment to the sport.

The world number six has not had the best of times at the Roland Garros losing in the quarter-final last year, but with the way he is playing it will be a shock if he does not reach the semi-final of the competition.

His opponent, Italy's Simone Bolelli is not in the best of form, winning just one game heading into the French Open. A former top 10 doubles player, Bolelli is currently ranked 116 in the world and as seen so far, he may not shock Nishikori.

Head-to-head

The duo have faced each other twice in the past, with Nishikori winning both the encounters. They last took on each other in the round of 128 of the 2015 Wimbledon with the world number six winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

French Open history

Nishikori and Bolelli have never faced each other in the French Open.
