A shooting has been reported at Hindi trading centre near Kenya's coastal resort of Lamu island.

Houses have been set alight, while a police station has been attacked at Gamba.

The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said on Twitter that gunfire had been heard.

The Kenya Red Cross has sent emergency teams to the area, but no casualties have been reported so far.

The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said on Twitter that police were responding to the incidents.

It is not clear who is behind the latest shooting in the region, but it is suspected that the Somali militant Islamist group al-Shabab is responsible.

The militant group mounted a number of attacks in the region early last month, which left 60 people dead.

Hindi is 15km (nine miles) from Lamu and close to the town of Mpeketoni, which was nearly destroyed in one of the attacks last month.

Lamu island is a well-known tourist resort, however, the attacks happened on the mainland, in Lamu County.
