American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey is allegedly one of the contenders for the chance to sing the next Bond theme tune.

The singer known for her sultry tones is one of two possibilities currently rumoured for the job, with the other being British star Sam Smith.

The rumour mill says Smith has supposedly been in talks with Bond film producer Barbara Broccoli, although Smith recently denied this in an interview with NME.

Del Rey, 29, has previously had hit tracks on two other film soundtracks – the track Young and Beautiful, for The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and an adaptation of Once Upon a Dream, for Disney's blockbuster Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie.

"Producers know it has to be a great song with a killer vocal to rival the phenomenal success of Adele's 'Skyfall," a source told The Sun. ''Sam seems like the favourite but Lana could definitely give him a run for his money.''

Adele's Skyfall is currently one of the bestselling Bond themes of all time and the first to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song, the first Oscar for a Bond film in 47 years.

The next Bond film currently has the working title Bond 24 and is due for release October 2015.
