London bus strike: What commuters and tourists need to know

London bus drivers have gone ahead with a 24-hour strike, as part of a campaign over pay and conditions.

The stoppage was organised by members of the Unite union across 18 bus companies. Only 44 out of 673 bus routes are expected to be operating today (13 January), leaving millions of commuters struggling to get to work.

Services were affected from 4am, with buses operating on Wednesday morning also likely to be disrupted.

Transport for London has warned that journeys were likely to be "significantly disrupted" as only 30% of buses were running this morning.

Unite has said there is no collective pay deal between drivers, meaning that there are 80 different pay rates for drivers doing the same job as wages were negotiated depending on the company. The union said hourly rates can vary by more than £3.

TfL said less than 16% of the bus drivers in London voted in favour of industrial action. A survey of 1,600 bus passengers for Unite showed two-thirds backed the campaign.

The services affected include: Abellio London, Abellio West London, Arrive North, Arriva South, CT Plus, Go Ahead, London Sovereign, London United, Metroline, Metroline West, Stagecoach, East London Bus & Coach Company, Selkent and Tower Transit.

You can follow @TflBusAlerts on Twitter for updates throughout the day. Bus passes and tickets will be accepted on the Underground, DLR and Overground on Tuesday due to the strike.

How long does it take to walk between tube stations?

TfL has warned commuters to check the website for updates on bus routes and London Underground services. However, the walking map - shared on social media with the hashtag #WalkLondon - is a good alternative for those wanting to avoid public transport.
