Apple has unveiled a new Mac mini powered by its M6 chip, bringing the company's first 2-nanometre processor to the compact desktop alongside substantial CPU, graphics and artificial intelligence upgrades.
With more cores and faster memory arriving after the M5 generation, the specifications could leave recent Mac buyers weighing how much the latest performance gains matter for their workloads.
Mac Mini M6 Release Date and Price
Apple has confirmed that the new Mac mini with the M6 chip will be released on 22 September 2026, giving buyers a firm date for the company's latest compact desktop upgrade.
According to Apple, the M6 Mac mini starts at $899 (£659.33) in the US, setting the entry point for a machine powered by the company's first 2-nanometre chip. The new model arrives with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and upgraded AI hardware, putting its price and performance gains under scrutiny for existing M5 owners considering another upgrade.
Apple is targeting the M6 at a broad range of users, including students, developers, everyday Mac owners, AI enthusiasts and businesses, with a focus on stronger performance, improved power efficiency and faster on-device AI workloads.
Mac Mini M6 Specs Bring Apple's First 2nm Chip
At the centre of the new Mac mini is Apple's first chip manufactured using a 2nm process, which allows greater transistor density within a smaller die.
The M6 features a new 12-core CPU, up from 10 cores on the M5. Its architecture consists of two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, with each designed to handle different levels of computing demand.
Apple says the M6 delivers up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4 times the performance of the M1.
The company says those gains should accelerate demanding tasks including compiling code, editing images, indexing files and running agentic AI workloads.

M6 Mac Mini Gets Bigger GPU and AI Upgrades
Graphics performance is another major focus of the M6 Mac mini specs. The processor includes a 12-core GPU, two more cores than the M5, with a Neural Accelerator built into every GPU core.
According to Apple, that delivers a nearly 30 per cent increase in peak GPU compute for AI compared with M5 and more than eight times the performance of M1.
The GPU also supports Apple's latest shader architecture, Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Apple says geometry processing rates have increased by 50 per cent, helping with complex graphics, rendering and gaming.
M6 supports up to 32GB of unified memory and provides up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, representing a 10 per cent increase over M5.
Why M5 Owners Face a Difficult Mac Mini Upgrade Decision
For M5 owners, the most significant differences are concentrated around additional CPU and GPU cores, faster memory bandwidth and expanded AI hardware.
The M6 introduces a Dual 16-core Neural Engine that Apple says provides up to twice the peak compute of previous generations. System frameworks can also use both engines simultaneously to accelerate model execution.
Those changes are particularly relevant for users running local large language models, coding workloads, creative software and other AI-intensive applications.
The scale of the upgrade for individual M5 Mac mini owners, however, will depend on their workloads as well as the new machine's price once confirmed.
Apple Pushes On-Device AI With M6 Mac Mini
Apple is increasingly positioning Mac hardware around running artificial intelligence locally. The M6 can use its CPU, GPU and Neural Engine for AI processing while supporting on-device large language models.
Developers can access the hardware through tools and frameworks including Core AI, Core ML, Metal and Xcode. Apple says this approach allows developers to build and run powerful AI workloads locally, including proprietary models and features that tap into Apple Intelligence.
