Manchester City have extended their lead at the summit of the Premier League table to three points over bitter rivals and neighbours Manchester United.

On Monday night, City defeated Wigan Athletic 1-0 at DW Stadium. The Latics, who are at the bottom of the points table at the moment, put up a brave, solid show taking on the League leaders especially in the latter half. But Roberto Martinez's side badly needs a goal scorer who is capable of hitting the target meticulously without faltering half-way through.

The winner came from Edin Dezko who headed home David Silva's left-wing free-kick on 22 minutes. The goal marked his first in 11 matches for the club.

It was a heartening result for City given the fact that it was earned without some outstanding names on the squad. And Roberto Mancini continued his practice of waving an imaginary card.
