Manchester United are closing in on launching a £40m bid for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal after the Italian club named their price, according to the Express.

The Old Trafford club agreed deals for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw last month and are re-building the squad this summer in order to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Incoming United manager Louis van Gaal is aware of Vidal's potential and the Dutchman rates him very highly. The Red Devils' league rivals Arsenal are also interested in signing the midfielder.

The Italian champions are unwilling to let their star player leave the Turin club unless the potential suitors meet their £40m asking price. United have already submitted a bid for Vidal as they look to bolster their midfield for the new campaign.

The report claims the Red Devils agreed a deal in bringing the Chilean international to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. A move to United will see Vidal lose out on the Champions League football as the Premier League outfit failed to qualify for the European competition.

It is believed that Vidal is eyeing a new challenge and could leave Juventus for another club. A £40m bid from United would be hard for the Serie A giants to reject.

The same report also claims the Champions League winners Real Madrid were interested in securing a deal for Vidal. However, they have ended their pursuit as they are closing in on signing Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos, who was linked with a move to United.

With Real out of the race for Vidal, United are the front runners for capturing the midfielder. However, the Old Trafford club could face competition from Arsenal as Arsene Wenger is considering a bid for the Chilean midfielder.
