Manchester United's already miserable European season has come to a rather ignominious end.

The Red Devils have been eliminated from this season's Europa League, following a 1-2 second leg defeat to La Liga's Basque flag bearers, Athletic Bilbao. The English club had earlier lost the first leg, at home, 2-3; Thursday's result means the team at the summit of the Premier League have been beaten 3-5, on aggregate, by Bilbao.

Manchester United, who were outfought and outplayed at Old Trafford, were similarly unimpressive at the San Mames. The Basques were in stunning form right from kick-off and fired off a strong of dangerously accurate shots very early in the game.

It was no surprise therefore when the hosts took the lead, in the 23rd minute, thanks to a brilliant strike by Fernando Llorente that left De Gea stunned.

Despite the fact that Bilbao's target man and goal scorer Llorente was forced off due to an injury, later in the first half, the Spanish club continued to press and were rewarded with their second goal of the night, on 65 minutes, thanks to 22-year-old Oscar de Marcos.

United struck back for a consolation goal through Rooney will be the first to admit their performances, both at Old Trafford and in Spain were very ordinary.
